Basketball by Association: Ranking the Top Five Centers in the NBA

November 29th, 2012

The growing stereotype is that "center is a dying position in the NBA."  However, not only does picking the top 5 big men create quite a debate, but one quickly realizes that nearly two thirds of all NBA teams have a "quality pivot" manning the middle for them.

True, there might not be as many superlative talents at the center spot when compared to the Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Shaquille O'Neal heyday of the 1990s. However, NBA teams today might actually be trotting out fewer "stiffs" than most recent decades.

As NBA Assistant Editors Ethan Norof and Joel C. Cordes discover in this episode of "Basketball by Association", the blurring of the power forward and center spots are actually strengthening the talent pool, not weakening it.

Picking a top 5 becomes very difficult and entertaining endeavor, and we invite you to leave your picks and reactions in the comments section below!
