Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Denver Nuggets Season Preview

August 16th, 2013

The Denver Nuggets had their best regular season ever last year, got bounced early in the playoffs and seemed to go into panic mode this offseason. Did they scuttle their short and long-term future in the process?

On the bright side, Ty Lawson, Kenneth Faried, JaVale McGee and Danilo Gallinari are all oozing with potential and athleticism. New coach Brian Shaw is likable and has a great track record of developing young guys. Plus, newcomers JJ Hickson, Nate Robinson and Randy Foye are all very solid acquisitions at great prices.

Yet, defensive wunderkind Andre Iguodala is gone. So too are Coach of the Year George Karl and Executive of the Year Masai Urjiri. Even the loss of athletic wing Corey Brewer hurts.

So will they keep playing at their frenetic pace? Do they have a logjam up front and at point guard, but a gaping hole at shooting guard? How fast can they develop a true star internally, and who's taking the final shot? Can they win a playoff series? Will they even get that far in a crowded West?

Featured Columnist Adam Fromal joins NBA assistant editor Joel C. Cordes for the latest episode of Basketball by Association.

We look at the best and worst of the Nuggets' offseason, along with the biggest questions heading into 2014. We'll also detail Denver's keys to a successful year while predicting its final standing.
