Basketball by Association: 2013-14 San Antonio Spurs Season Preview

August 21st, 2013

One win, one shot and a few moments away from their fifth NBA title, the San Antonio Spurs fell that far short. So they kept their offseason typically quiet.

Swapping Gary Neal for Marco Belinelli is as big as the changes got. San Antonio is clearly banking that Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green's maturation will be inversely proportional to whatever declines Tim Duncan and Tony Parker may face this year.

But do they have enough collective improvement to cover for a clearly-aged Manu Ginobili? Can they trust guys like Tiago Splitter, Matt Bonner and Cory Joseph to not only log regular season minutes, but much more importantly, to be consistently positive assets during the playoffs?

No one's doubting that the Spurs' chemistry and discipline will keep them in the hunt all season long, even if teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and LA Clippers all have more talent and that fabled "extra gear".

But will they have enough firepower and athleticism to do more than just "out-execute" people during the postseason's biggest moments?

Spurs Featured Columnist Stephen Babb joins NBA assistant editors Ethan Norof and Joel C. Cordes for the latest episode of Basketball by Association.

We look at the best and worst of the Spurs' offseason, along with the biggest questions heading into 2014. We'll also detail San Antonio's keys to a successful year while predicting its final standing.
